The much-awaited second part of Mani Ratnam’s grand historical saga, Ponniyin Selvan, hit the screens on Friday and has been well-received by the audience. The film’s impressive opening day numbers speak for its success as it raked in a total domestic collection of Rs 32 crore.

According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, Ponniyin Selvan 2 garnered a considerable amount of revenue on its opening day, with 59.94% occupancy in Tamil, 10.20% in Hindi, and 33.23% in Malayalam. The film trade analyst, Manobala Vijayabalan, remarked, “Ponniyin Selvan 2 has had a great start at the box office in Tamil Nadu. It has surpassed Varisu to secure the second-best opening of the year. However, Thunivu still holds the first position for 2023.” Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu had collected Rs 26.5 crore on its opening day across India.

When the first part of the film, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel of the same name, hit the screens in September 2022, it had a phenomenal start. The movie shattered all records, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film with a global collection of Rs 80 crore in its opening weekend alone. By the end of its theatrical run, the film had amassed a gross collection of over Rs 500 crore worldwide, which is quite impressive.

Given the excellent response and positive feedback from the audience, the prospects for the second part, PS2, seem equally bright. It is expected to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and continue its successful run in the theaters.
